A missense mutation, also called non-synonymous mutation, is a type of
point mutation where a nucleotide is changed, which results in the production
of a different amino
acid. Such mutations are responsible for diseases like Epidermolysis Bullosa and
sickle cell disease. For example, in sickle cell disease, a codon GAG, which
codes for amino acid glutamine, is changed to GTG, which codes for amino acid
valine.
