Editor's Note

Kromosoft Genetics Events Monitor
Kromosoft Genetics Events Monitor has been the most complete listing of genetics events on the Internet for the last two years. Now, it also happens to be one of the most user friendly, using a very convenient "Filter" box on the right. You can easily filter the list of genetics events by location, or by date range. For example: interested in upcoming genetics events in North America only? Simply click on North America on top of the genetics events monitor. Interested in events in January? Simply click on the "January" link. Want to go back in time to see events from the past? Sure, simply click on the "Archive" link.

Just in case you come across a genetics event that is not listed in our database (which is unlikely), you can also submit it to the database using the "Submit an Event" link at the bottom of the page.

Gene expression and social behavior interrelated
Nov 6, 2008
Genes in the brain are malleable, turning on or off in response to internal and external cues. While genetic variation influences brain function and social behavior, social information also alters gene expression in the brain to influence behavior. Thanks to the newly sequenced genomes of several social animals, including honey bees and zebra finches neuroscientists are gradually coming to understand that there is a dynamic relationship between genes and behavior.

Genome of a cancer patient sequenced for the first time
Nov 5, 2008
For the first time, scientists have decoded the complete DNA of a cancer patient and traced her disease - acute myelogenous leukemia - to its genetic roots. A large research team sequenced the genome of the patient - a woman in her 50s who ultimately died of her disease - and the genome of her leukemia cells, to identify genetic changes unique to her cancer.

Featured Genetic Test: Fukutin - FKRP Gene Sequencing
Fukutin-related protein, related to muscular dystrophies, is coded by exon 4 of the FKRP gene located on chromosome 19q13.3. Testing is accomplished by amplifying exon 4 and ~50 bp of adjacent noncoding sequence.
