Abstract

The Bombay Phenotype was first described in Bombay, India, and refers to a rare variation in the blood type inheritance pattern. It describes the phenomenon in which the type O child is born to the parents who are not type O themselves, and/or do not both carry an O allele. In such cases, the O blood type of the child is not based on the phenotype/genotype of the parents. This occurs when the child inherits a recessive H (h) antigen.
